Population movements, mobilities, exchanges between different peoples are an integral part of human history. Like every other country in the world, France has thrived on these population flows and has been influenced by all those who have travelled through it, left it, or settled there, coming from Europe, the former colonies or the rest of the world. Today, almost one third of French people are either immigrants, children of an immigrant, or grandchildren of an immigrant.

Structured around 12 key dates, from 1685 to the present day, this exhibition presents an approach to the history of France through the lens of migrations. It helps visitors grasp their diversity and complexity, and introduces them to some of the players in this history, which links individual and collective trajectories.

It provides a basis for challenging and reconsidering popular beliefs, supported by historical, demographic, legal and sociological data, presented alongside works of art and archive documents.
