Thinking outside the boxes. Comics and migration - mobile exhibition
How does comic art address the issue of migration? At the intersection of cultural history and the history of immigration, the mobile exhibition Sortir des cases (Thinking outside the boxes) focuses on the authors who have progressively taken up this subject. It also highlights a dual evolution: comic narratives have changed over time, as have the representations of migration and the foreigner.

Thinking outside the boxes explores the historical relationship between the development of the comic book and migratory movements. It spotlights the way in which the comic book gradually became a unique vehicle for talking about migration and its challenges, in ever-more diverse formats, relying heavily on personal and family stories.
Mixing works from every era, from the earliest days of the comic book to the most recent publications, it questions how representations of the foreigner, the immigrant and migration have evolved, alongside changes in mindsets.
Objectives
- Present some of the key authors in the history of comic book development and show how their migration journey did, or did not, influence their work.
- Show how the development of new forms of storytelling enabled the emergence of different ways of talking about migration.
- Give a voice to male and female authors who have described the personal stories of migrants.
- Show how the portrayal of migrations and migrants in the comic book has evolved and deconstruct the prejudices, caricatures and stereotypes that still underpin many racist and anti-Semitic acts today.
